The increased emphasis on safety in the refining and petrochemical industries has produced greater sophistication in the analysis of overpressure concerns and in the design of pressure relieving systems. Although relief system design is typically the responsibility of process/chemical engineers, there are many aspects of pressure relief systems that project engineers, mechanical and reliability engineers, inspection specialists, and other plant personnel should be familiar with.
Inspectioneering has teamed up with The Equity Engineering Group to bring you Pressure Relief for Non-Process Engineers: 10 Things All Plant Personnel Should Know, a one hour webinar presented by Phil Henry, Principal Engineer II at E2G. The presentation provides a high level overview of some of the current and most pressing issues related to the design, installation, selection, sizing, inspection and testing of pressure relief devices.
Specific topics discussed include:
- ASME Code requirements;
- Credible vs. remote overpressure scenarios;
- Recent API guidance on PRV instability and the 3% Rule;
- Inspection and testing intervals; and
- Sparing of relief valves
About the Speaker
Phil Henry, Principal Engineer II - Risk-based Inspection & Process Technology Team Leader at E2G | The Equity Engineering Group, Inc., is a recognized subject matter expert in the areas of Pressure Relief, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Flow. He is a specialist in the design, installation, sizing, and selection of pressure relief devices and relieving systems, and has been the Chairman and Master Editor of the API Pressure Relieving System Subcommittee’s Task Force on API 520 for the last 23 years. Mr. Henry routinely conducts audits of pressure relieving systems to ensure compliance with OSHA, PSM legislation, and ASME, API, and DIERs Standards, Codes, and Publications. He also teaches the official API Pressure Relieving Systems course.
In his current role with E2G, Mr. Henry provides technical support and engineering consulting to all levels of refinery capital projects. He is responsible for the preparation of purchase specifications, design reviews, and the development and validation of approved vendors lists. He also conducts project safety reviews for construction and pre-start-up phases of major capital projects. His responsibilities include developing and maintaining engineering specifications in the pressure relief and heat transfer areas and providing overall coordination.
